Ipswich 30th May Report

33 Cars made it to Foxhall Stadium on a sunny bank holiday afternoon for round 5 of the Safari Engineering Series, Garry Sparkes didn't make it however as his trusty (or not) transporters engine let him down on route. In the pits were most of the regulars plus the return of former English Champion Pip Williams driving Jason Baraclough's car which used to be Pips anyway.

Sam Stacey lead away heat 1, but not for long as Phil Proctor and Dave Smith were on a mission, Proctor leading first then Smith taking over and moving well clear. Further back Dave Miles Jnr was moving up well as was Colin Aylward and Steven Jackson for the superstars, Williams tried out his front bumper a few times before retiring with engine trouble which was to be the flavour of the meeting for him. Dave Smith won comfortably from Proctor who got one of his best results for a while.

Heat 2 began to look a bit more 'racey' for the supers as Dave Smith wasted no time in getting on front again, this time followed by Alex Meadows. Nick Smith despite his dislike for blue grade starting, was beginning to look good again and took up the chase on the flying Dave Smith. Sarah Cooper and Paul Langridge were having a good battle, which eventually Sarah won, giving her 4th place. Top reds were Mark Smith and Munford, with Ben having a last bend attempt to take 6th from Mark, to no avail.

Dave Smith was moved up to the blue grade for the final which spelled disaster as he clipped the wall right near the start taking him out of contention. Proctor had shot into the lead when the yellows came out for the stricken Sam Stacey and Liam Lambert on the scoreboard bend. Re-Start order was 279, 176, 151, 57, 432, 95, 416, 114. On the re-start Nick Smith took the lead with Mark Smith shoving his way quickly into third, but it wasn't green for long as Jack Hughes clipped a wayward Proctor to send Hughes into a roll and with Langridge caught up too, the reds were out. On the re-start the order was 151, 176, 416, 432, 95, 376, 114, 51. Nick Smith shot away well again as Mark Smith moved into second and Colin Aylward shot through into third. Steven Jackson mistook the black flags meant for Marjoram (broken wheel iron) and pulled off, much to his disgust when he realised! Meanwhile up front the gap was staying pretty consistent between Nick Smith, Mark Smith, Chopper and John Saunders who was impressively holding onto the back of the World Champion in fourth. Billy Smith and Jason Cooper were having a good battle for fifth which Cooper won. Nick Smith won reasonably comfortably, taking his second final in a row, followed by a good showing from Mark Smith then Colin Aylward, Saunders, Cooper and Billy Smith.
